Global equity markets have been decimated this year, declining from October last year as the US-led sub-prime debt market collapse expanded into a deteriorating global economic and business environment. While the Australian equity market has not been immune from these forces, not all sectors have behaved in this strongly downward trending fashion. Our market is composed of many business types, each with its own respective business cycle, which meld together to form the basis of the overall equity-market cycle. Over time, under given economic and market conditions, these sectorial business cycles can vary quite markedly from each other.

US stocks fell and the S&P 500 Index slid below its lowest close since 2003 as financial shares tumbled and uncertainty over a possible rescue for the US auto industry fuelled concerns about the deepening economic slump.
European stocks fell, pushing the Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index to the lowest level since 2003, led down by banks and commodities on concerns over a deep recession.
